Sports Mall Personal Trainer Kim Hymas

Personal training is never a one size fits all situation. That’s why personal is in the title. For example, it helps if you at least like your trainer in order to show up for the workout. Get to know more about Sports Mall’s nationally certified trainer Kim Hymas.

Sports Mall Personal Trainer Kim Hymas1. What motivated you to become a personal trainer?

I have always been involved in sports, recreation and fitness. After spending 8 years in retail selling sporting and fitness equipment, I decided that I really enjoy teaching people about fitness and sports more than selling it. It’s a great feeling to help someone achieve their fitness goal and to be healthier and able to do more active things. Seeing people move easier and do the things they enjoy and feel good really keeps me going!

2. What training and qualifications did you go through to become a personal trainer?

I studied through National Academy of Sports Medicine. I have their personal training certification as well as their advanced certification: corrective exercise specialist. I have also studied under the American Academy of Health and Fitness: youth Fitness Training Specialist and Senior Fitness Training Specialist. I am also TRX certified and Power Plate certified.

3. What’s your favorite part about working with SportsMall members?

I’ve been working here for 6 1/2 years, and the members at the Sports Mall are like one big happy family! It has been wonderful, so many great people and the members I work with are amazing! It’s a love-hate relationship; they love to hate me or specifically the working out and pushing them to be better!

4. Why would you recommend people get personal training at SportsMall? What can you help them achieve?

The trainers at the Sports Mall are all great! We really care about the safety and well being of each member. We want to see everyone achieve their goals and do it safely. Even if you know what you are doing, we can give you a new challenge to keep your workouts exciting and fresh.

If you have never been to a gym before, it’s good to have a trainer show you the equipment and give you proper lifting techniques so that you can achieve your goals safely and keep you progressing. It’s also good to have someone to report to and keep you going.

I help with weight loss, nutrition, general fitness, sports related goals and corrective exercise. What’s your fitness goal? I can help get you there!

5.  What would you recommend to someone who is intimidated by working with a personal training?

Don’t be intimidated. We’re here to help you enjoy working out and reach your fitness goals. That doesn’t mean it will be easy. Yes, it’s going to be hard at times, but that’s what makes it worth it. Plus, you get a friend and supporter who really does care! We can help keep you motivated!

6. What’s your favorite machine or workout move you like to teach trainees?

I like to use as many muscles as possible in one exercise. One of my favorites is pushups on the BOSU ball–excellent core and upper body workout.

7. What’s your favorite training moment you’ve had during your career?

There are too many great moments! Like when a client breaks through that plateau, or finally is able to do the lift, or an exercise that they have struggled with. When a client comes to tell me after a trip, “I hiked here or I walked this far or I climbed this many stairs and I wasn’t tired” that’s when I’m most excited.

8.  How did you develop your Sports Mall nickname?

I have a few names that people have called me: killer, slave driver, Dr. Mengali, Cruella, drill sergeant. I smile when my clients say “I survived the Kim.” These names come about as the workouts get a bit tougher and there are some sore muscles for a few days. Most are smiling when the workout is over, or when I say it’s time to stretch.

9.  What additional interests do you have outside of personal training?

I enjoy outdoor recreation, hiking, biking, basketball, softball, any sport really! I also enjoy doing yard work and gardening. And on the more relaxing side, I enjoy reading and putting jigsaw puzzles together.

10. What else would you like people to know about you?

I enjoy working with people in all aspects of life. I enjoy adventure and trying new things. I am really easy going and like to work hard and have fun. Life is an adventure, enjoy every minute of it!
